This project not only seeks to protect endangered species today, but also lays the groundwork for a more hopeful future. By preserving the genetic material of these species, we are ensuring that future generations will have the opportunity to study the incredible diversity of life on Earth.
This biobank represents a beacon of hope in a threatened landscape, reminding us that together, we can make a difference in the conservation of our planet and all its life forms.

Cell Culture Biobank for Difficult Taxa
The CRYOZOO through the IBE-CSIC institution is part of the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) project; https://www.erga-biodiversity.eu/, an European consortium with 37 countries collaborators where the CRYOZOO is involved in cell culture and Biobanking specifically in the culture of difficult or undescribed taxa.
Critically Endangered Vertebrates
The CRYOZOO is part of the Catalan Initiative for the Earth Biogenome Project; https://www.biogenoma.cat/, generating cell lines of vertebrate species from the Catalan territory.
Cell Culture Biobank for Catalan Vertebrates
Based on the work carried out in CRYOZOO, two of the members of the project; Tomàs Marquès and Cira Martínez are members of the Animal Conservation Biobank Specialist Group (ABC SG), part of the IUCN Species Survival Commission, which helps to organize a worldwide effort to collect and conserve the species, and share genetic resources as a major key to current and future conservation efforts.
Animal Biobanking for Conservation Specialist Group
CRYOZOO collaborates with the ORG one project to support the rapid sequencing of endangered species anywhere in the world. As part of this initiative, CRYOZOO generates cell lines from critically endangered animals, contributing to their conservation and genomic research.
